Conques, UNESCO medieval village — 8 km from La Roquette

June 2025 · 5 min read

Just 8 kilometres from La Roquette eco-lodge, Conques is one of the most beautiful villages in France. This medieval jewel perched above the Dourdou gorges is an unmissable stop on any stay in Aveyron.

An abbey born in the heart of the Middle Ages

The Abbey of Sainte-Foy at Conques dates from the 9th century. It was built to house the relics of Saint Foy, a young martyr from Agen, whose cult drew pilgrims from across Christian Europe. Construction of the Romanesque abbey church as we know it today began in the 11th century and lasted more than two hundred years. The result is an architecture of rare coherence: central nave, galleries, crossing — everything breathes serenity and the mastery of the Romanesque builder.

The tympanum of the west portal, carved around 1130, is considered one of the masterpieces of Romanesque art worldwide. It depicts the Last Judgement with striking narrative precision: the elect to Christ's left, the damned to his right, and in the centre a set of scales being tampered with by the devil. Take the time to stop and study this great book in stone.

The Treasury of Conques: gold and relics

The Treasury museum, housed in the adjacent conventual buildings, holds one of the most remarkable collections of medieval goldsmithing in Europe. The centrepiece is the Majesty of Saint Foy, a gold and gemstone reliquary statue from the 10th century. Around it, chalices, shrines and reliquaries bear witness to the abbey's wealth and influence at its height. The visit takes about an hour and is well worth the modest entrance fee.

Conques on the Camino de Santiago

Conques is an official stop on the GR65, the via Podiensis, the Camino de Santiago that links Le Puy-en-Velay with Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. Every year, thousands of pilgrims and hikers pass through the village, staff in hand and scallop shell on their pack. The atmosphere in the cobbled lanes is unique: a blend of contemplation, fatigue and genuine wonder.

From La Roquette, it is possible to join the GR65 on foot via the paths that run along the Dourdou, for a memorable half-day loop. You can also park at the village of Conques and walk down to the Roman bridge over the Dourdou, then return along the opposite bank for a loop of roughly 5 km.

Strolling through the medieval village

The village itself is an enchantment. The cobbled lanes, the half-timbered houses, the craftsmen's shops and the small terraces suspended above the gorges form an ensemble of rare architectural coherence. Conques is listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, and you quickly understand why. Avoid the height of summer (July–August) if you prefer quietness — the site is very busy then. May, June, September and October are ideal.

Do not miss the Chapelle Saint-Roch, perched on a rocky spur with a plunging view over the village and the valley. The climb is minimal, the photographic reward is maximal.

How to get there from La Roquette?

By car from La Roquette eco-lodge in Grand-Vabre, Conques is about 8 km along the D901 — roughly ten minutes. By bike, the road is more demanding but magnificent along the Dourdou. We lend bikes to our guests — ask about this when booking on our accommodation page.

Allow half a day for a leisurely visit including the abbey, the Treasury and a meal on site. A full day if you add a walk through the Dourdou gorges. We can prepare a packed lunch for you — just let us know the evening before.
