Swimming in the Lot: the guide to river bathing in Aveyron
June 2025 · 5 min read
The Lot is an exceptional river. Its green, clear waters wind through the gorges and chestnut forests of Aveyron, offering one of the finest freshwater swimming environments in the south of France. At La Roquette eco-lodge, the river is just two minutes on foot.
Water quality in the Lot in Aveyron
The Lot in its Aveyron stretch, between Espalion and Entraygues-sur-Truyère, is one of the least polluted rivers in the Massif central. Upstream from Grand-Vabre, no major town or heavy industry affects water quality. Analysis carried out annually by the water agencies consistently returns excellent results. The river is home to trout, grayling and white-clawed crayfish — reliable indicators of clean water.
The water is cool even in the height of summer: between 18 and 22°C in July, making for an invigorating but accessible swim. Children particularly enjoy it, and adults appreciate the transparency of the water, through which you can see the pebbles and fish gliding beneath the surface.
La Roquette's private jetty
One of the great pleasures of this riverside eco-lodge on the Lot in Aveyron is having access to the river just two minutes on foot. La Roquette has a wooden jetty at the bottom of the garden, just a few metres from the accommodation. You can settle there with a book and slip into the water when the heat sets in. No need to take the car, no need to find a parking space: swimming is right at home.
The riverbed is sandy and gravelly at this point, with a depth that gradually increases. This is ideal for families with young children. In the evening, the jetty becomes a prime observation post for kingfishers and grey herons that come to hunt at dusk.
Swimming spots in the area
Beyond La Roquette's jetty, the Lot valley holds several remarkable swimming spots within 30 minutes by car:
Entraygues-sur-Truyère (20 km): the confluence of the Lot and the Truyère forms a wide pebble beach very popular with families. The village is magnificent with its medieval Gothic bridge.
Espalion (40 km): supervised water sports centre in July–August, ideal for young children. The old Roman bridge and the corbelled houses also make it an architectural stop worth making.
Saint-Projet (15 km): a more discreet pebble beach, frequented mainly by locals. Deep water, wild landscape.
Canoeing and kayaking on the Lot
Swimming is not the only way to enjoy the Lot. Several canoe and kayak hire companies offer trips of 1 to 3 days between Espalion and Entraygues. The stretch between Grand-Vabre and Entraygues (roughly 12 km) is perfect for a day with no technical difficulty, with a few easy rapids to add some excitement. We can recommend trusted local providers.
For fishing enthusiasts, the Lot is a first-category river along this stretch, classified as a trout zone. A fishing permit is compulsory and can easily be obtained online or from the local association. See our The Place page to find out more about all the activities around La Roquette.
Tips for safe river swimming
The Lot is a wild, unsupervised river for most of its length. A few simple rules apply: never dive into water whose depth you do not know, supervise children at all times, be careful after storms (the river can rise rapidly), and avoid swimming alone far from the banks. If the water level rises, the current can become powerful even when the surface appears calm.
With these precautions observed, the Lot remains one of the most accessible and enjoyable rivers for freshwater swimming. Come and see for yourself from our riverside eco-lodge on the Lot.
